‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’ – state of Minnesota, United States
Located in the Midwestern region of United States is the state of Minnesota.
The state carries more than 5.2 million residents, has the nick name of ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’ due to its extensive water area. The water and surrounded parks and forests have been providing the state and visitors a wide range of outdoor activities opportunities.
Apart from Alaska, Minnesota is the most northern state, an area also known as the Upper Midwest region. Neighboring states are Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba. Minnesota has continental climate, which brings the extreme temperatures differences in winter and summer. Heavy rain, snow, blizzards, thunderstorms, tornadoes and hail, all can influence the state.
Getting There
The biggest airport serving the region is the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International airport. There are 8 other regional airports scattered in other cities within and nearby the state, namely Duluth, Rochester, Saint Cloud, Brainerd, Bernidji, Thief River Falls, Hibbing and International Falls. Getting to the state with train is also possible, where trains are running from Chicago to Seattle and Minnesota. Buses are running from Minneapolis to Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee while driving across and outside of the state via highways are extremely convenient.
Major Cities and Respective Attractions
Saint Paul
Situated in the east-central area of the state along the Mississippi River banks, this capital city of Minnesota’s is just next to Minneapolis. The two together makes the ‘Twin Cities metropolitan area’ in Minnesota. If you are visiting Saint Paul in winter months, do not miss the Saint Paul Winter Carnival, which displays ice sculptures, winter food, ice palace etc. Other attractions in Saint Paul are the Science Museum of Minnesota, Minnesota Children’s Museum and the Alexander Ramsey House etc.
Minneapolis
Minneapolis is the most populous city within the state. With the ample amount of water around the city, water activities are extremely popular and accessible. The famous Holidazzle Parade, the nighttime parade held several times a week between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a must see if you are around at that period.
Other cities in the state are Duluth, Bloomington, Plymouth, Rochester, Brooklyn Park, Eagan, Coon Rapids etc.
