Six Flags over Texas – the Lone Star State in America



Texas is the second-largest state in the United States in terms of size and population. The name ‘Texas’ is originated from Caddo language as ‘friends’ or ‘allies’. The state is situated in south central region, bordering Mexico, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. The say ‘six flags over Texas’ is originated from the nations that had been ruling Texas, namely, Spain, France, Mexico, Texas itself as a republic, as slave state and then finally become a state in the Confederate States of America.  Texas is also known as the ‘Lone Star State’, signifying its independency as a republic and as a reminder of the state’s struggle for independence from Mexico. The “Lone Star” can be found on the Texas State Flag and on the Texas State Seal today.

Texas is renowned of its southwestern desert area, however, desert occupies only 10% of its total area. Other areas in Texas are manly prairies, grasslands, forests and coastal area. The difference in landscape in the large space of land contributes to differences in climate zones. When you are visiting the state, bear in mind that the northern part has toughing winters while the Gulf Coast has milder winters. Summers are around 26 °C in the mountains of West Texas while the average temperature for other regions in summer is around 32°C.

Thunderstorms, hurricanes and tornados are vastly affecting the state every year. Try to avoid months from April to June where tornadoes tend to take place.

Texas is an important transportation hub in the central region of America. Huge railways and highways were developed to cater for the travelling demands across the state as well as across nation.

In terms of air travel, Texas also owns the most number of airports among the whole country.  The largest 2 is Dallas-Fort Worth International Aiport and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Aiport. Besides these 2, Other major airports can be found in San Antonio, El Paso and Austin.
